By

JEFF SCOTT

The in-form North Island representative, Luxury Liner, will be attempting to extend an unbeaten record over the Toyota New Zealand Cup distance of 3200 m when he steps out in the famous event tomorrow.

The Mercedes gelding has only tried the 3200 m trip twice for wins in a C 5 handicap at Alexandra Park last December recording 4:11.8 after starting from 10m, and in the $lB,OOO Wilford Johnstone Memorial (C 7 at Cambridge in March. In the latter event, the Clevedon-trained pacer overcame a 30m handicap to beat Direct Kiwi (the 1986 Auckland Cup third place-getter) comfortably by two and a half lengths in a respectable 4:10.2. While the Cup distance >d obstacle fe

Gene Evander, while in the same month the Vance Hanover entire was also the beaten favourite when fifth in Vance Glory’s fast-run Franklin Cup, which was won in 4:7.1.

Comedy Lad, a shade unlucky in Borana’s New Zealand Cup last year, has failed to win in six attempts at the distance, his closest being a second to Dillon Dale in the 1984 Thames Cup on a rainaffected track.

The leading South Island contender, Skipper Dale, has won twice over the extreme distance at Addington recording his best 3200 m time of 4:10.9 in the Lion Brown Easter Cup, in very cool conditions. He is yet to finish further back than fifth in five attempts at 3200 m. The fastest time of any

of the Cup runners is credited to Camelot, which returned 4:6.4 when winning the 1984 N.Z. Cup.

Those looking for consistently experienced distance pacers should be heartened by the records of Our Mana (14 starts for four wins and the New Zealand Cup runner-up in the last two years), Borana (12 starts for his upset win in the N.Z. Cup win last year, three thirds and two fourths) and the five-year-old, Freightman, which has already had 12 starts over the Cup distance for a win in the 1984 Methven Cup, and has been third or fourth on six occasions.
