Bowls Newcomers provide upsets
The promoted teams this summer, Kaiapoi I and Hornby I, both had good wins in the second round of the premier three-fours interclub bowls competition on Saturday. Both made the most of a home green advantage to score 6-2 wins against more favoured sides. kaiapoi I, in particular, would be thrilled to take two games, and the aggregate, off the powerful Papanui I combination, which has been the three-fours champion in three of the last four seasons. Travis Coup was the Kaiapoi skip to lose, to Brian McGowan, but Coup’s teammates, Allan Griffin and George Matthews, each got home with something to spare. There was never much doubt that Kaiapoi had the skips to do well in the top division; on Saturday it showed it all also had enough strength in the other positions as well. Linwood I, which had a sixpoint win over Riccarton W.M.C. I on Saturday, has emerged as the early leader of section A. Results (home teams and skips named first): — Section A Bumside 11 v.
