Beere wins second yacht race
The Christchurch Yacht Club skipper, Bill Beere, continued his good foorm when he won the second race of the Canterbury Zephyr championships sailed on the Estuary on Saturday. Sailing his yacht Echo, Beere capitalised on a good start and opened up an early lead on the fleet as the winds strengthened to 15 knots. Beere, the South Island champion, went further ahead on the windward-lee-ward beat, to win by 2min 4s from Graeme Hore sailing Bonnie.
Hore finished Imin 5s in front of the third place-getter,
Murray Hay, in Muscatel. In the opening race of the Canterbury Sunburst championships, also sailed on the Estuary, Ross Baker and Robert Butterfield from Timaru, in their new yacht Mapara, dominated the event to win by smin from the Sunburst champions, Tony and Kirsten Beasley in Sunseeker.
