Penalties for crime
Sir, —"Let the punishment fit the crime.” < This is no longer happening ijf our country and I
support the views of G. Richards and R. Boswell (November 5). Anyone we have met returning to New Zealand after five years or less is horrified at the change in this country. One male or female can no longer walk in town safely at night; more rape and murder and most who can afford it having burglar alarms installed. “Criminals” are now called “offenders.” Gangs scare the majority of people. I also feel
the prisons have been made so comfortable that these “offenders” no longer dread returning. Court judges must get tougher. I agree with the prison officer who said these violent crimes should be punished by the death sentence. I am sure stronger deterrents are our only hope.—Yours, etc.,
J. PARSONSON. Halswell, November 6, 1986.
