Training programme expanded
PA Wellington A 30 per cent drop in apprenticeships this year has prompted Government to expand the training assistance programme to include skills usually associated with apprenticeships, said the Minister of Employment, Mr Burke. “By tradition, skills in the trades areas have been regarded as the exclusive preserve of the apprenticeship system,” he said. “This means that young people must have a job
before their training can begin. “Today, however, the number of people seeking training is rising and the number of apprenticeship openings is falling.” New Zealand could not allow the number of young people learning skills to be decided solely by employers and the job market of the day. In future any skills may be taught by any training provided under the Training Assistance Programme and subsequently under the Access scheme, Mr Burke said.
