Campaign on bicycle safety launched
PA Wellington The Minister of Transport, Mr Prebble, and Wellington’s new Mayor, Mr Jim Belich, yesterday launched a bicycle safety campaign. It is aimed at cutting the number of road accidents involving bicycles. Sponsored by the Ministry of Transport and the Accident Compensation Corporation, the campaign’s main thrust will be carried by television advertisements.
Last year 21 cyclists died on the road and about 1000 suffered injuries, according to Ministry figures. Children are especially at risk, with 60 per cent of all fatalities children up to 14 years of age.
All of the celebrity cyclists wore helmets, to emphasise the importance the campaign will place on cyclists avoiding head injuries through wearing protective headgear.
