Saloon honours to Gold

Close, hard racing entertained a large crowd at Woodford Glen Speedway on Saturday evening. The very quick Nissan of Robert Gold and the Escort of "Mannite” Edmonds fought out the lead in the first < two A grade saloon races.

Gold gained the upper hand on each occasion, but found more competition in the third race. This time he was up against the Escort of Tony Blanchard and try as he might he could not gain the advantage with the two cars crossing the finish line together. Kevin and Margaret Kerr made it a one-two finish for the family in the B grade saloons. The result was reversed in the next race, Margaret’s Victor this time beating the Mark 111 Cortina of her husband, Kevin.

Tony Cardwell swept all before him in the super saloons, but had to work the Pontiac Firebird hard in the feature race. Kevin Kerr led at the start from Blanchard and Gold with "Jumbo” Berryman making a return in Don Ritchie’s Mustang. Berryman was soon through to second while Cardwell made his charge from the back, passing the RX7 of Peter Watts and Denis Bolt’s Torana. It was not long before

Berryman passed Kerr for the lead, but Watts slowed things down when he lost a wheel in the back straight, allowing the field to close up under the caution lights.

From the restart Cardwell was soon into fourth place behind Gold and Blanchard, whom he soon passed, Bolt doing likewise a lap later. As hard as he tried Berryman could not hold Cardwell out and the Firebird chalked up another victory. The winning laurels also came easily for the Sportsman driver, Kenny Hannah, scooping the pool with three wins from three starts, although Gordon Foster was never far away on each occasion.

Gary Ellis found his car bent like a “banana” in the street stock event after he hit the concrete wall heavily while going backwards.

Alan Parkhill’s Valiant also managed to hit the back of Ellis’s car, but Parkhill was still able to roll up two third placings. Gerald Griffiths scored two more easy wins in the stock car class, only to be sidelined in the third. This event saw the prizemoney going to the second car across the line, all competitors pushing and spinning in an . endeavour to not lead the event.

Griffiths ended up stuck in

the damp infield, whilst Peter Field took the chequered flag, giving the race win to the second-placed Brian Hern. Results.— Street stocks.— Race one: T. Stevens 1, B. Neil 2, A. Parkhill 3.
