Speed there, says Conner

NZPA-AP San Diego

Stars and Stripes’ skipper, Dennis Conner, who lost the America’s Cup to Australia in 1983, says chances are good he can bring the sailing trophy back to the United States.

“We feel good about our boat and we have the speed that’s really going to give us a great chance to win this,” said Conner, who returned to San Diego for a short rest between rounds in the preliminary America’s Cup competition off Fremantle. . 4

Conner said few of the challengers were fast enough to make a serioiis run at the finals.

“From our standpoint, it’s probably going to be pretty tough for most of them to catch up, but we still have a lot of races 'to win,” he said. “I think that the people that are slow know it. There’s going to be about only five or six people who can make the final four at this point, just because they’re so far out.” First-round results sent many entrants scrambling to make changes to their boats. A few, Conner said, would change boats altogether, thereby forfeiting any points earned in the first round.
