party. Mr Comber is managing director of his own company, Agrarian Holdings. For the last two years he has also been secretary of Kiwi Lotto, Ltd, but will give up that post because of his decision to seek the Ohariu nomination. Three other men have publicly said they are interested in the candidacy. They are the Bankers’ Association executive

director, Mr Max Bradford; the director of the Opposition’s research unit, Mr David Lloyd; and Mr Doug Catley, chairman of the Wellington Hospital Board’s works committee.

The regaining of Ohariu, now held on a slim majority by Labour’s Mr Peter Dunne, is seen by political observers as crucial to National’s chances of success at the next election.
