Track conditions make Dare a doubtful starter

Special correspondent New Plymouth The chances of Dare winning the $20,000 Evergreen Stakes at the Egmont Racing Club’s meeting at Hawera today dimmed yesterday with rain falling in the area. Dare requires firm footing to show her brilliance and she is now a doubtful starter. Obviously if track contiions don’t deteriorate and Dare does run she has to be the one to beat. But, without Dare in the field Cosmetique, Ahuyentar, Jayell’s Pride and Just A Star are in line for the major prize. Cosmetique has had only one run since resuming after a spell. She was a close third at Matamata on October 7. Given that run would have improved her a great deal, Cosmetique should be a good proposition over 1400 m. Jayell’s Pride can handle almost any sort of track, and she was a handy third to Axeman at Ellerslie on October 11 at her last start.'

Ahuyentar has won her last two races and has achieved those successes in style.' She faces her stiffest assignment today but looks up to it. Sierra Sand, Lady Dealer, Pell Mell and Eroica all add to the strength of the line-up. The Evergreen Stakes is the second leg of the T.A.B. double. In the first leg, the Galaxy Cheese Cup, Kerykeion is selected ahead of Sophie’s Secret and Dreamawin. Kerykeion won fresh-up at Opaki and has won previously at Hawera. Sophie’s Secret will handle a rain-affected track as will Dreamawin. Milldewe went a grand race for third at Opaki while Stanley Frank is right at Peak form. Del’s Delight and Bronze Valley add to the possibilities.
