Davison aiming to improve brilliant south record

By

J. J. BOYLE

The Riccarton jockey Grant Davison has been the personality of recent Southland meetings for his spectacular record of wins to mounts, both at Wyndham and earlier, at Winton. He landed seven winners on those two southern forays, four of them at Wyndham last Friday. Davison will return south with a full book of mounts for the first day of the Gore meeting on Saturday, but will return home that evening and will ride at the North Canterbury Racing Club’s meeting at Rangiora, on Monday. His line-up for Gore will include Boldem, Sowick, Satiny’s Pride, Reine Du Bal, San Vito, Benmore Boy and probably Superior. A glamour mount for Davison at Rangiora will be the greatly-talented Levin three-year-old Arctic Wolf. The young star

of Garth Ivil’s team missed a start at Riccarton last Saturday because c df the conditions, and a : race at Rangiora now asr sumes greater importance on his build-up for the New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas. Arctic Wolf came in for much attention when he galloped on the No. 6 grass at Riccarton yesterday. He was giving Davison a double handful as he finished 600 m two lengths clear of Mr Magoo in 37.65. Another of the more impressive trialists was Pokare. He gave Osmunda Hill and Poetic Justice a start of three lengths from the 600 m, but dashed up in the straight to finish two lengths clear. Pokare would have bettered 38s for the trip. Osmunda Hill recorded 38.45. Panther and Zaheer, stablemates of Arctic Wolf, and two of the earliest workers, dashed in

from the 600 m on terms in 36.85. Panther will probably be launched on a South Island campaign against the sprinters at the North Canterbury meeting. His last appearance on a Canterbury course was at the 1965 Grand National . meeting where he won the Selwyn Handicap in style only to lose the race in the inquiry room. Canterbury Belle ran in from the 600 m in 38.85, She might have a delayed start to her five-year-old programme in the sprint at the Banks Peninsula meeting with engagements at the New Zealand Cup meeting to follow. Noble Note and Advocate sprinted 1200 m in Imin 21.25, the last 600 m in 38.45. Gunyah Earl recorded Imin 23.6 s for 1200 m, and 41s for the last 600 m. Oak King returned 1:245, slowing close to the end after running the

opening 600 m in 41.95. Dig In was paired with Kaoru Brave for 600 m, run in 39.45. Time’s Magic and Broken Blaze finished in 38.25. Dawn Tide and News and Views sprinted 1200 m on terms in 1.225, the last 600 m in 40s. Prince Pepe ran in from the 600 m in 39.45, and Elizabethan followed in 38.65. Pronto King, a last-start winner at the Winton meeting, is an acceptor for Gore on Saturday, and an entrant for the Lion Brown North Canterbury Cup at Rangiora on Monday. Michael Pitman will delay a decision until he studies the weights. Tane Matthews has been engaged for the two-year-old Toy Dagger, another winner for the Pitman stable at the Winton meeting. Matthews will also ride Stylish Living and Comparable.
