Labour Day Competitions
The Haig International Dressage Competition is to be held at the Christchurch A. and P. showgrounds on Monday, Labour Day. The competition was the brainchild of the president of the International Equestrian Federation, the Duke of Edinburgh, and Mr Michael Henderson, the chairman of the Scotch whisky manufacturers, John Haig and Co., Ltd, of England. It was devised to give horses and riders from around the world the chance to compete against one another, without the expense of long-distance travel.
John Haig, Ltd, is responsible for the expenses of the judges, who travel between the countries of the participating groups. Competitors; in this
year’s competition include: The Black Douglas, and Jennifer Stobart (Cust); Kestral, and Charlie Meares (South Canterbury); Aztec, and Sue Wells (Nelson); Mountbatten, and Megan Harvey (Hastings); Kentucky, and Marcia Bayley (Te Awamutu); Destiny, and Sue Hobson (Pahiatua); Pot Black, and Sharon Dearden (Taupo); Stipulate, and Vicki Larsen (Auckland); Conway, and Molly Brownlee (Cambridge); Felicitation, and Eric Rophia (Woodville). The judges are Miss Els Mouw, from Holland, and Mr Frederick Obel, from Denmark. Miss Mouw has been judging since 1966 and has been ranked an international judge for seven years. Mr Obel has been an international judge since 1978.
