Pottery dangers
The hidden dangers for amateur potters are outlined in a new booklet by potter Rosemary Perry. Mrs Perry wrote the booklet, "Potters Beware. Hazards encountered in Making, Firing and Glazing Ceramics,” to warn potters about the toxic chemicals and fumes with which they work. Mrs Perry says the booklet should help potters know the hazards. The 15 pages detail the health hazards in table form with common materials listed according to their effect. Those effects can be painful, even fatal. Two reviewers have recommended the book as essential reading for potters. It is a slim paperback, available for $5.50 from the Canterbury Potters Associations, Cobcraft and the Courtyard Pottery. The proceeds from the sale of the first printing will go towards safety equipment for the Canterbury Potters Association roosps in the Arts Centre.
