Guides’ unusual fun day activity

Encouraged by their companions, Lara Mines, aged 10, wields a sledgehammer, while Sarah Marra, aged 12, uses a crowbar to help demolish a car at Pioneer Stadium, on Saturday.

The demolition of the car was one of the more unusual of several activities organised at the stadium for about 1000 Canterbury Girl Guides from Cheviot to Leeston, as part of a fun day. Called “Day of the Four Winds,” the event was organised by the Girl Guides Association so that the girls from four different Canterbury areas could meet each other and try activities they might not normally experience, said a mem-

ber of the fun day committee, Mrs Cheryl Kumeroa.

The guides were also given the opportunity to take part in demonstrations by members of the Red Cross, Civil Defence, the Ministry of Transport, the New Zealand Army, the police and Fire Service.

Other activities included basic mechanical information about car engines, archery, modelling, deportment, haircare, design and theatre, as well as a variety of sporting events.

The event was first held two years ago, and it was hoped it would be held every three years from now on, said Mrs Kumeroa. 3
