Anti-drug bill approved
NZPA-Reuter Washington The United States Senate has approved a sweeping anti-drug bill after replacing a death penalty provision for drug-related murders with a mandatory life sentence. The action came after Senators opposed to the death penalty threatened to block passage of the bill. It was sent back to the House of Representatives, which had approved the death penalty provision last week. The House may pass the bill tomorrow. The bill increases penalties for drug dealers and provides about SUSI. 7 billion ($3 billion) for more aircraft, radar and other equipment for law enforcement agencies to fight drug smuggling, and to fund drug education and rehabilitation programmes.
