Fires clear mine
NZPA-Reuter Johannesburg About 2000 men were evacuated yesterday when underground fires triggered an emergency at the Kinross mine, scene of South Africa’s worst gold mine disaster last month. The men were brought to the surface after “two separate and minor fire incidents of unknown origin,” said the owners, General Mining Union Corporation.
Some 177 miners died last month when a fire sent poisonous fumes through the I.6km deep mine, 140 km east of Johannesburg. A company spokesman, Harry Hill, said yesterday’s fires were quickly extinguished. After last month’s disaster, the black National Union of Mineworkers had charged that lax safety measures at Kinross contributed to the accident
