New tanks for brewery

Cranes lift the first of 12 conical-bottomed, stainless steel, fermenting vessels into place at Lion Breweries, Ltd, Christchurch, yesterday. The first four tanks, which will. cost $1.3 million, are hoped to be producing beer by Christmas. The other eight will be commissioned early next year. The tanks would triple the fermentation space at the brewery, said the head brewer, Mr John Tooby, last evening.

Each tank will hold 1200 hectolitres and weigh 150 tonnes when full. Protech Engineering, in Auckland, designed the tanks which will replace old flat-bottomed tanks. The conical bottom allows easier extraction of yeast after the brew has , fermented. Brewing in the new

vessels will be controlled by computers. When fully erect they stand 15 metres high. All 12 tanks will rest on 20 piles, each sunk 13 metres and tied to a concrete base at ground level. All tanks will be freestanding outside the brewery. Access will be by covered walkways.
