Award system a mockery, says National
By
PATRICIA HERBERT
in Wellington The wage deals being struck now between groups of workers and their employers are making a mockery of the award system, says the Opposition spokesman on labour, Mr Bill Birch. He said yesterday the deals showed that both sides recognised the advantages of direct bargaining and site agreements — policies advanced by the National Party. The Government’s
White Paper proposals, however, went in the opposite direction. The 1000 minimum membership rule would create such inflexibility as to make possible the recent settlements, Mr Birch said. Meanwhile, the manager of the Fisher and Paykel plant at Mosgiel, Mr Murray Hicks, has confirmed that the company’s 6 per cent offer, accepted by its engineering workers this week, was made before the drivers settled.
