Campbell to ride Tri Belle
Special correspondent Wellington Senior Central Districts rider, Maurice Campbell, has gained the ride on Tri Belle in next Saturday’s $40,000 Desert Gold Stakes at Trentham. Tri Belle won the $30,000 Lowland Stakes at the Masterton Racing Club’s meeting at Opaki on Saturday. . She was ridden by Noel Harris, who rode the filly splendidly. Harris will ride the Margaret Bulltrained filly, Latitude, at Trentham. The Campbell engagement and the fact that the filly will run at Trentham was confirmed by her Takanini trainer, Ray Verner.
Verner, who has a good record of success at Trentham, was not at Masterton on Saturday. He was at Ellerslie watching Ocean Express triumph, and with the $20,000 Counties meeting scheduled for Pukekohe next Saturday, it is unlikely that he will travel
south next week-end to attend the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting.
Tri Belle, which was brought to Masterton by Colleen Ingram, is now based at the Awapuni stable of Allan and Vivienne Kaye, Verner’s home away from home when he campaigns in the Central Districts. It was a Kaye runner which was Tri Belle’s strongest rival on Saturday. Radiate, a Star Way filly with a liking for bad ground, made a determined bid to win halfway down the 450 metre Opaki straight and she was the only threat to Tri Belle before the Takanini filly drew away to win by three and a half lengths. Radiate was second a length from Our Big Bird, which sustained a strong finish to beat Never Winter, Etoile D’Or and Margarella. Midnight Lady, the Cavanagh Stakes winner at Hastings, was never in contention and faded to finish 10th on the wet track.
