Race Ruler looks set for favouritism

By

G. K. YULE

Race Ruler, away from racing since he won at Alexandra Park in record time for 2200 m on July 4, looks a ready-made favourite for the Lion Brown Rising Star Championship Heat One at Addington Raceway this evening. He and his stablemate, Maurie’s Boy, which is the Second Heat, have shown to advantage at trials and are considered to be sufficiently forward to match their more-seasoned Canterbury rivals in the feature races on the first night of the Canterbury Park Club’s October meeting.

Race Ruler will as usual be driven by the country’s top reinsman of last season, Maurice McKendry. He has drawn No. 5 at the barrier in what appears to be the strongest of the two heats. He has great ability,

which should carry him through to another victory as a lead-up to the $30,000 final of the championship on Friday week. El Red, so impressive when he finished second to Hayden Bromac in a slickly-run 2000 m on October 1, could offer more than token opposition to the talented favourite. El Red had little in his favour when he ran second and he should be sufficiently improved to extend the northern visitor.

Little River, Speedy Cheval and Twilight Tim are others expected to add interest to the finish of what is the second leg of the T.A.B. treble.

Hayden Bromac will be a dominating favourite for the other heat even though he has drawn the second line. His 2min 30.3 s for the mobile 2000 m when he won at his

race debut a fortnight ago showed him to be one of the more exciting secondseason pacers about.

That’s Incredible, went well when fifth on October 1 and he should make a bold bid, as should Maurie’s Boy, Snowy River, Paxton and Beaudiene Bolta. Whoopee, trying for his fourth win for the season, will be a popular fancy in the Max Bowden Racing and Breeding Stables Handicap, to be run over 3200 m. The Jim Fergusontrained six-year-old outclassed his rivals a fortnight ago and should not find the extra distance beyond him.

World of Fame and Late Lustre both finished fourth at their lone starts this season and they could offer most opposition to Whoopee, while a big run is also expected from Dreamy Guy.
