Knockout cricket
Bad weather during the last two week-ends has left three first-round matches in the Atlantic and Pacific Travel knockout club cricket competition unplayed. However, organisers have completed arrangements for the second round of games. Rather than decide which teams will progress from those first-round matches yet to be played by tossing a coin, organisers have set those games down for next Sunday, along with two second-round matches. Second-round games which cannot be played until after Sunday must now be completed by December 7. The two second-round games on this Sunday will have Kaiapoi at home to High School Old Boys and Old Collegians hosting Lancaster Park. St Albans and Geraldine will meet on Sunday to find which team will entertain East-Shirley in the second round, while Heathcote or Little River-Akaroa will play host to Sydenham or Riccarton. The two first-round games played on Sunday (Old Boys
beat Cheviot, by default, arid Park eliminated BurnsideWest- a week earlier) both had interesting features. The newcomer to th,e C.C.A. senior competition, Woolston W.M.C., was bundled out by a convincing margin by Kaiapoi, while Paul McEwan made good use of his first turn at the crease this season with a spanking 94 for Old Collegians against Marist. The former international batsman hit five sixes and 10 fours in his innings, which dominated the Old Collegians innings in a match reduced by 10 overs. the two matches on Sunday resulted.— ' Kaiapoi 151 (R. Wilkinson 37, J. McAllister 23, G. Merrin 21; A. Johnpilla 4/23, M. Hartland 3/30) beat Woolston W.M.C. 96 (A. Gambles 25 not out; D. McAllister 3/32, P. McAllister 2/12, Merrin 2/4). Old Collegians 134/5 off 30 overs (P. E. McEwan 94; <G. MacDonald 2/6) beat Marist 98 (D. Grealish 29, R. Cunningham 22; G. O’Reilly 3/20, C. W. Lawrence 3/18).
