Party politics
Sir, —The “Team” which has so successfully swept into power in Waimairi has, unfortunately, swept away some of the most hard-working and experienced councillors the district has had in recent years. Councillors Ralph Skjellerup, Hazel Tait, Martin Hobby, lan Calvert and lan Clark have given devoted service, both to Waimairi and to metropolitan Christchurch. Their defeat is the, result of the emergence of party (or “Team”) politics in Waimairi, and of what amounted to a “mayoral” campaign designed to pre-empt the vote for chairman which follows the election. This is a big change — especially for a council which has always declared its disapproval of political parties in local government, and pointed to the allegedly baleful effects of party politics on the Christchurch City Council. As I retire from the (comparatively harmonious) Christchurch City Council, I sympathise with and salute those involuntarily retiring Waimairi councillors who did not join “the Team.” — Yours, etc., HELEN GARRETT.
