Gandhi feted in Indonesia

NZPA-Reuter Jakarta The Indian Prime Minister, Mr Rajiv Gandhi, was garlanded with flowers and greeted by President Suharto when he began a 24-hour visit to Indonesia yesterday. Security was tight as Mr Gandhi, who escaped an assassination attempt in New Delhi on October 2, was whisked away in a convoy of cars from Jakarta’s Halim military airbase. The leaders of the world’s second and fifth most populous countries were to have several hours of talks, followed by a State banquet in the evening. The Indian leader is on a four-nation tour which will also take him to Australia, New Zealand and Thailand. His talks are expected to focus on boosting trade and industrial co-operation.

Indonesia would like to get Mr Gandhi’s backing for its bid to become next

chairman of the 101nation Non-Aligned Movement in 1989. Nicaragua has put in a rival candidacy. Several former Portuguese African territories are opposed to Indonesia because of its annexation of the former Portuguese colony of East Timor 10 years ago.
