Mr Twentyman tops Hospital Board poll
Christchurch’s recently retired police chief, Mr George Twentyman, topped the poll for the Canterbury Hospital Board in Saturday’s local body election. Mr Twentyman beat the top polling candidate of 1983, Dr Jocelyn Hay, by 221 votes and had a comfortable margin over the four other sitting members who were re-elected.
One sitting member, Citizens’ Mr Wilf Colley, missed re-election by more than 4000 votes.
Following Mr Twentyman’s lead, four other Citizens’ candidates polled well enough to be ; elected to the board’s city district. With the two Citizens’ candidates elected in the Waimairi district and the one in the Paparua district, Citizens holds a handsome advantage over Labour which is represented by a sitting member, Mrs Janet Aitken, and Mr David Close.
Mr Close polled third ahead of the sitting members, Dr Bill Utley, Mrs Caroline Cartwright, Mrs Aitken, and Mrs Margaret Ferner.
The three Independents standing for the City district did not reach five figures with their votes.
The seven successful candidates join those elected for the Hurunui, Heathcote, Waimairi, Rangiora, Ellesmere, and Paparua districts an-

The delay in the announcement of the City district members was caused by the high return in the City. With a total of more than 2,250,000 votes to count for the Mayoralty, City Council, and five ad hoc authorities, the City counters finished only the Christchurch Drainage Board of the ad hoes on Saturday. . The returning officer, Mr Bill Davies, and his staff continued the task yesterday and will finish today. Results still to come are for the Lyttelton Harbour Board, the Christchurch Transport Board, which was partcounted yesterday, and the North Canterbury Catchment Board.
Footnote: Mrs May Langdon was elected to the Hornby District Council on Saturday. Her name appeared incorrectly yesterday, as Macßae.
