NZPA-AFP Cape Town Guy Bernardin, of France, at the helm of “Biscuits Lu,” finished third in the first stage of the single-handed round-the-world yacht race in Cape Town yesterday. Bernardin, who crossed the line in the early hours of the morning, was for a long time in second place behind the stage winner, John Martin, of South Africa, in “Tuna Marine,” but in the past few days had been overhauled by
another Frenchman, Phi-I~ lippe Jeantot, who was second in “Credit AgricoleIII.” ~ Martin crossed the line late on Saturday night, completing the stage from Newport, Rhode Island, in a time of 42 days, one hour, 10 minutes and 36 seconds, while Jeantot arrived yesterday afternoon, 14 hours 20 minutes slower. Bernardin was 28 hours 48 minutes behind Martin and 14:29 slower than: Jeantot. ??
