Stallone, Parton break money-making records
NZPA-ReuterNew York
Sylvester Stallone made the most money from a motion picture in 1986, Dolly Parton the most from a single concert, James Clavell the most from a single book and Ferdinand Marcos the most from a single country.
Those, according to the latest “Guinness Book of Records,” are only a few of the records set this year; a year that also saw the world’s largest salad tossed, the fastest shrimpeating, and the most eggs laid by a duck before dying of exhaustion. The editors say 1986 was marked by new records for the rich and famous.
The wealthiest person
in the world, by the Guinness count, is the Sultan of Brunei, Sultan Sir Muda Hassanal Bolkiah, who did a bit of refurbishing at his SUS422-million, ($844 million) 1788roomed palace on the island of Borneo. He could afford to; he makes about SUS3.7B billion each year from oil revenues, and has foreign reserves of SUSI 4 billion.
Marcos was billed by Guinness as the world’s biggest alleged thief, accused by the Philippine Government of stealing up to SUSIO billion during his tenure as president.
The actor, Sylvester Stallone, raised his prices twice and set a record each time. He got SUSI2 million plus a share of box office receipts for “Rocky IV,” and has received SUS2O million so far for “Rambo,” making him the world’s highestpaid actor.
Meryl Streep holds the record. for highest-paid actress, with SUS 3 million for “Out of Africa.”
The rock singer, Bruce Springsteen, known as “The Boss,” was the boss when it came to making money from a concert tour, with SUSII7 million. But Parton was the highest-paid entertainer for a single appearance, commanding SUS4OO,OOO.
James Clavell, • who wrote the bestseller “Shogun,” received a SUSS million advance for a
forthcoming work, “Whirlwind.” At the other end of the scale, the world’s poorest nation is Chad, where per capita income fell to SUSBO a year. A duck in Aylesbury, England, got into the book by laying 457 eggs in 463 days, including an unbroken run of 375 in 375 days before dying on February 7 — possibly from exhaustion, the Guinness people discreetly add.
The residents of Belle Glade, Florida, tossed the world’s biggest salad — 28 tons of lettuce and tomatoes. (no onions) — but when it comes to conspicuous consumption, noone tops London’s Peter Dowdeswell, speed-eater extraordinaire.
Dowdeswell added 13 new records to his previous nine, including I.4kg of shrimp in three minutes 10 seconds; 13 raw eggs in one second and 100 yards of spaghetti in 21.7 seconds.
In the category of Records You Never Thought Existed — Ashrita Furman, of New York City, became the new underwater pogostick champion with 3303 jumps in 2.5 metres of water; Sal Piro watched the cult film, “Rocky Horror Picture Show,” for the 873rd time; Maxwell J. Beck let 70,000 bees swarm over most of his body to win the “bee-beard” competition.
