Dubious chess variation

By

ADRIAN LLOYD

The former world champion, Anatoly Karpov, continued a sensational comeback with his third consecutive win against Garry Kasparov in the world chess title match. Karpov’s third win on end came in the nineteenth game and it enabled him to level the scores with his Soviet countryman, ln the finish though, it was Kasparov who recovered better to retain his title. In the nineteenth game, Kasparov played the dubious Prins variation of the Grunfeld defence, and Karpov skilfully deprived his opponent of important squares. Kasparov attempted to free his cramped pieces by giving up a rook for a knight. However, Karpov was able to steer the game into an ending in which he emerged a pawn ahead. The position at the adjournment was quite grim for Kasparov because Karpov’s kingside pawns were able to move down the

board without hindrance. Kasparov had no further option other than, to resign. Game 19 is set out below: White: A. Karpov Black: G.
