Ice offer ride only
The United States Antarctic Programme yesterday corrected remarks made in London on Thursday by Mr Robert Swan, of the Footsteps of Scott expedition. At a press conference in Christchurch on Thursday, the director of the United States Antarctic Programme, Dr Peter Wilkniss, offered a free ticket from the Ice to the remaining three members of the expedition at Cape Evans. The offer was for the
men and their personal effects.
Mr Swan was quoted in “The Press” yesterday as saying that United States personnel would removal all of the expedition’s “aircraft, equipment, and rubbish.”
Dr Wilkniss repeated yesterday that the offer was of “three tickets.”
The offer was not concerned with the material aspects, but was made out of concern for human life, he said.
