Wairewa tried to hire clerk

The Wairewa County Council tried to hire the services of the Ellesmere County Clerk, but has been turned down. The county made the approach to Ellesmere because the Wairewa County Clerk, Mr Bill Aydon, will retire in March. Ellesmere, unsure about the effects local body amalgamation would have on the county’s workload, did not want to lend its County Clerk, the Wairewa County Council was told at a meeting yesterday. Ellesmere advised Wairewa to advertise for another clerk in the usual way. But Wairewa, not knowing if there would be a

permanent job for a clerk because of amalgamation did not want to do this, said the County Chairman, Mr Bill Thompson. He said that he doubted if the council would be able to attract an applicant if a secure job could not be offered. Cr David Cadman suggested the council should approach a bigger local authority, such as the Christchurch City Council, and see if a clerk could be seconded until local body restructuring was settled. However, the council decided to advertise the position, and appoint a new clerk should a suitable person apply.
