Final attempt to refloat trawler

A final attempt was being made last evening to free the ill-fated trawler Howard L. Shadbolt, which was grounded north of Motunau Beach last Saturday. Two men have ’ been killed, another two injured, and two helicopters have been damaged during the salvage work. The owners of the trawler planned to haul the boat off the beach at high tide. Two other Independent Fisheries, Ltd, trawlers were to be used in the attempt. Foam and sealed plastic containers have been placed inside the stricken

trawler to giver her extra buoyancy. Previous attempts to refloat the trawler failed because of the amount of water in her and because the lines attached to the other trawlers snapped. An attempt on Thursday ended when two men were killed by a helicopter that crashed on to the deck.

It was not known last evening what would happen to the 21m trawler if the refloating attempt failed. It was thought she could be a navigational hazard if she eventually floated free herself.
