Govt soccer ultimatum
NZPA-AFP London The British Government got tough with the English Football League yesterday, giving it six weeks to come up with a membership card scheme to combat hooliganism. The Minister of Sport, Mr Dick Tracey, annoyed at the League’s decision to expel Luton from the League Cup because of its away fan ban, issued the
ultimatum at a meeting with leading administra tors of the League and Football Association. He said: “We believe urgent action is now needed, so I have asked the league to let me have a report within six weeks on the steps the league and the clubs will take to introduce effective membership schemes.”
