Cavalier Elco to try again

PA Auckland The directors of Cavalier Elco, Ltd, will make another attempt to change the company’s name at the annual meeting on October 30. The chairman, Mr P. W. Grayburn, said in the annual report the name change to Cavalier Corp, Ltd, would help to create a greater public awareness of the Cavalier range of carpets. A similar move failed at the 1985 annual meeting when Mr H. J. Lichtenstein opposed the change because shareholders had not been fully informed. The managing director, Mr A. C. Timpson, said in the report that Cavalier Elco, Ltd, must play its

part in ensuring that the market is free in all aspects, including state monopolies and unnecessary labour controls. He said the company must accept the role as catalyst in this period of change. The company had tried to forestall disruption in its own labour force by promoting a Registered Company Agreement. “Cavalier’s proposal was finally adopted by staff and resulted in the first two-year labour contract registered for the New Zealand textile industry,” said Mr Timpson. Wool stock levels were reduced by two-thirds after the adoption of an alternative buying system, Mr Timpson said.
