Influence of wives
Sir,—l was delighted to read that Mrs Gorbachev is accompanying her husband to the forthcoming meeting in Iceland. I trust that Mrs Reagan will be there also. A wonderful opportunity exists for these two women — mothers and grandmothers — to inject some warmth into what could be just another jazzercise in power politics. Because they are women first and their husbands’ wives second, it is possible that their
love and concern for; their children’s children could help them influence the tone of the meeting. In their handbags, I hope they have family photos to share. I suggest that everyone who is joining in the Minutes for Peace Campaign concentrates on the good will that must be engendered at this meeting. A simple man, President Reagan may yet be reached by some small human touch. Perhaps a new recipe for Ukrainan pumpkin pie? The world watches, let it also pray.—Yours, etc., (Mrs) GWEN MANHIRE. Takamatua, October 7, 1986.
