E1 Salvador

Sir, —Regarding the “Economist” article (October 6), it is true that the war in El Salvador will drag on for years, but only while the United States continues to pour millions of dollars into the militarisation of the area. The article completely glosses over the human magnitude of the civil war in El Salvador. United States military hardware has turned the country into a charnel house. The El Salvadorean air force, using AC-47 helicopter gunships, as well as napalm and phosphor bombs, is involved in a Vietnam-style scorched-earth policy, presumably recommended by strategists at the Pentagon. Sixty thousand people have died, and 750,000 are refugees. The El Salvadorean presidency has proved to be an ineffective government, especi-

ally in dealing with the death squads. According to “Americas Watch,” 2000 people were killed by death squads in 1985, which leads me to dispute the 20 a month stated in your article.— Yours, etc., KEVIN STOKES. October 7, 1986.
