Port safety
Sir,—Stan Hemsley (September 25) is right in expressing concern about the dangers of continuing the present siting of the oil wharf. It was the confined nature of the inner harbour and the implications of that for ship manoeuvring that led Labour members of the Harbour Board to oppose, at the Commission of Inquiry, the use of the oil wharf at its present site for the discharge of L.P.G. The Citizens members, however, moved that the board expend a considerable amount of money in supporting the Liquigas application, in opposition to the Lyttelton Borough Council and the Merchant Service Guild, representing the harbour pilots. — Yours, etc., MURRAY DOBSON. September 25, 1986.
