Top gallopers on show at Awapuni tomorrow

Special correspondent Wellington The recent spell of wet weather in the Awapuni area will do plenty to enhance the prospects of Catering King, Honour Bright and Gatcombe’s Pride in the $50,000 Highview Metric Mile at the Marton Jockey Club’s meeting at Awapuni tomorrow.

This trio of top class gallopers will be joined by one of last season’s stars, Waverley Star, and though he is an acceptor, Bourbon Boy is not expected to run at Awapuni.

With the likes of Koberstein, Mister Lumlee, Barusha and Metro it is, all round, a grand field. Waverley Star will be the drawcard. He has won twice this season, at Ellerslie and Avondale, and he is building up for an attempt on the Cox

Plate at the end of next month. Both of his wins have been on heavy and soft tracks so he should handle the footing competently here. Catering King also has a good record on wet tracks. His Ellerslie loss earlier this term has been followed by wins in the Foxbridge Plate and in the Byerley Thoroughbred Stakes at Hastings last Saturday.

The conditions will also assist Honour Bright which failed last time out at Hastings but began his four-year-old racing with a second behind Gatcombe’s Pride at Wanganui. Gatcombe’s Pride missed last time, in the weight-for-age Tim Rogers Stakes at Wanganui, but had won at his two previous outings. Gatcombe’s Pride’s stablemate, Koberstein, a

winner at Hastings on Wednesday, will also be at ease on the wet track as will Metro, winner of the Lowry Memorial on Wednesday. Major Drive, Kiwi and Norfolk Bard which are entered for big Melbourne races this spring are acceptors for the 2300-metre Motorcorp Handicap, the second leg of the T.A.B. double, but the likely favourite could be Lunar Trail, which is going through a purple patch of form at the moment.

Sophie’s Secret, which is racing well, will also be a chance while Dingle Bay, which failed to flatter at Hastings last Saturday, could be a different proposition this time.

While tomorrow’s test is a class one event, Dingle Bay drops from the 57 he carried in class three last week to 49.5 here.
