Goat farming draws crowds

An “exceptional” response has led to 500 enrolments in a goat farming course run by the Technical Correspondence Institute, the tutor, Mr Grame Tonks, has said. A student based in Singapore has also enrolled and there have been inquiries from Great Britain and Australia.

Nearly 80 per cent of enrolments are from women on farms. “In a lot of cases it is the farmers’ wives who have taken on the goat

side of the farm, particularly in milking,” Mr Tonks said. They appear more inclined to complete and return assignment scripts, he said. “The husbands probably look over their shoulders for the information.” Most of the correspondence pupils have alternative incomes to goat farming, Mr Tonks said, but the enrolments indicate the industry is becoming firmly established.
