Likely sides
Familiar faces seem to be the order of the day for the start of the Christchurch women’s senior competition. Many of the teams are not yet finalised, with play-offs still continuing at many dubs, but an indication of the possible line-up of women’s teams is:— SHIRLEY.— Sally Moorfield, Jill Hibbert, Leigh Johnson, Joanna Lake. UNITED.— The captain and previous No. 1 Shirley Haig, will not be playing this season because of the expected arrival of her third child. Phillipa Lewthwaite, Rosemary Gardiner, Lynette O’Dell, Julie Reid. BARRINGTON.— Robyn Hunt, Delia O’Malley, Lani Ratana, Vicki Ratana. Delia O’Malley could still be in doubt through nursing study commitments. ELMWOOD.— Karen Mellish, Andrea Barlow, Gillian Lavender, Ann
Culhane. FENDALTON.— Angela Brading, Sally Hughey, Hayley Barlow, Mary Jane Burke. This gives an indication of an interesting competition, as many differences will become evident in team strength. For example, the steady winning combination in Barrington doubles will depend on the availability of Delia O’Malley. If she is unable to play regularly Barrington will lose its usual advantage in the doubles. The combination of Vicki Ratana and O’Malley in doubles is very good. Fendalton will once again be without its always reliable, steady player Lyn Cowie, who will not be available this season as she is living and working in Wanaka. However, Angela Brading improved remarkably last season and if she continues to improve she could handle the No. 1 position well.
