City to pause for peace
Christchurch will pause for peace for one minute at noon on Tuesday, September 16. Forty other countries were also participating as part of the United Nations Year of Peace, said a representative of a committee co-ordinating Christchurch’s programme,' Ms Jacqueline Russell. A tent with balloons, banners, and flags will be set up in Cathedral Square from 11.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m., and the Mayor
of Christchurch, Sir Hamish Hay, the Wizard, and other Christchurch patrons will be there. Ms Russell said that the idea of the pause was that all over the world people would stop for one minute at noon (local time) arid “think a peaceful thought.” The aim was to collect a million minutes of peace from each country. “People might ask ‘What good will this do?’ We think that if people spent a minute each day
thinking positive, peaceful thoughts it would help them and in turn help the world,” Ms Russell said. The committee hoped traffic round the Square would stop for that minute. The Christchurch Transport Board agreed earlier this week to stop its buses round the Square so that people pausing for peace would not be distracted. Other activities for peace would be organised by the commttiee during the next month. ~ ad!
