Duplex plating
One of the new additions to the Accord Electroplating plant was the installation of a Duplex nickel-plating system — plating especially resistant to corrosion and weathering. The finish is used mainly for marine and automotive applications by Accord, which is believed to be the only firm using this process in the South Island. Conventional nickel chrome lets corrosion eat through the chrome coating, and bright nickel layer, to the metal below. Duplex nickel, however, acts as an effective barrier which spreads the corrosion laterally over the semi-bright nickel layer before allowing it to work through to the metal. This takes place over a number of years, delaying the appearance of rust and adding a longer life to the automotive or marine fittting. Duplex nickel has been proven successfully in Australia, the United States and Europe. It has also been in use at the Rolls-Royce car factory since 1978, and is used extensively on wheels and bumpers in Australia.
