Property went from vehicles
| A. youth who stole property valued at $7189 from seven vehicles, mainly on July 19, was sentenced to corrective training by Judge Hay in the District Court yesterday. Taking property from people who were visitors to Christchurch was "really disgraceful” and | such "atrocious beliavi- | our” would not have given them a very favourable impression of the city, said the Judge. Anthony Carl Towers, aged 18, unemployed (Mr E. Bedo) had earlier admitted 16 charges of theft, mainly from vehicles in car-parks. Among the vehicles were two mini-buses carrying a girls’ hockey team from the North Island. After taking bags, containing property worth $6015, from the buses, Towers, and an. associate, searched through them and then threw the bags into the river at Kerr’s Reach. Property stolen from five of seven vehicles was found in the defendant’s car. Towers offered no ex- | planation to the police for I the offending. Mr Bedo said his client, “an essentially immature and naive young man,” had, after being made redundant, gone flatting with a group of people which had led to his being drawn into offending. A substantial term of periodic detention was sought by Mr Bedo. 12 MONTHS JAIL David Allan Mulqueen convicted on 68 charges of fraudulently using a stolen Visa card to obtain goods and services, worth $5185, was sent to prison for 12 months. Mulqueen, aged 23, unemployed (Mr A. M. Mclntosh) committed the offences between May 22 and 26. “You certainly had a high old time with that credit card for a few days,” said the Judge. Mulqueen obtained mainly clothing and liquor. IMPORTED HEROIN A woman convicted of importing heroin was committed to the High Court for sentence on October 2. Bail of $30,000, set in the High Court, was renewed for Judith Elizabeth Streat, aged 23, a beneficiary (Mr J. J. Brandts-Giesen). ■ Daily reporting to the police is also to be continued. Streat admitted importing the drug into New Zealand in February, last year. A charge of supplying the drug was withdrawn on the application of Sergeant M. P. Caldwell. No summary of facts relating to the offence
was presented in court INDECENT ASSAULTS Shame and remorse were expressed by a man who admitted indecently assaulting three young girls in the Hornby district between June 19 arid August 7. Stephen James Churcher, aged 24, a fitter welder (Mr K. Searle), was convicted and remanded, on renewed bail, to September 25 for a probation report and sentence. Sergeant Caldwell said the offending occurred mainly when the defendant was on his way to or from work... The ages of the girls indecently assaulted were 11, 12, and 13. > . | The defendant-claimed the sexually-oriented offences had been spontaneous, said Sergeant Caldwell. <J ? DEPOSITIONS : DELAY The date for hearing depositions for four men facing charges relating to the murder of a man at Waimairi Beach in July was being delayed because the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research had yet to complete scientific analysis, said Sergeant Caldwell. Shane Smith, aged 21 (Mr L. M. O’Reilly); Gary Andrew James Loveland, aged 21 (Mr A. G. James) and Michael Moananui, aged 24 (Mr G. R. Lascelles) are each charged with the murder of Dale Punl whose stabbed and beaten body was found at the beach. Each of the accused was handcuffed. Ardie Tearoha Beazley, aged 32, self-employed (Mr M. J. Glue), is charged with being an accessory to the murder in that he assisted the others to avoid anest. His $9OOO bail, set in the High Court, was renewed. The four are next to appear in court on September 18. Apart from -Beazley, the others are to remain in custody. By then, counsel for the accused expect that a depositions date “sometime in October" can be arranged, rather than an earlier mentioned date in December.
