Embezzlement inquiry
PA Nelson The Nelson police believe a man has escaped with “many thousands” of dollars after allegedly embezzling the trust account of his own debt-collecting service. The head of the Nelson C. 1.8., Detective Sergeant Roy Powell, said yesterday the police were looking for the owner of a Richmond-based debt-col-lecting agency after several complaints from client companies. The police believed the man had collected debts
for the companies and put the money in his firm’s trust account. Instead of paying the money back to the companies, he withdrew it from the trust, account and left Nelson, said Detective Sergeant Powell. The man would have embezzled “many thou-\ sands” of dollars. There were probably many other client companies involved which had not yet complained, he said. A police accountant from Christchurch would study the agency’s books in Nelson on Tuesday.
