Michael Bell, the new national light middleweight amateur boxing champion, working out at the gymnasium of his trainer and uncle, Mr Peter Bell. A 20-year-old second-year university student, Michael Bell has made an outstanding return to the sport after a lay-off of four years. In his first senior season he won two bouts before claiming his New Zealand title in Hamilton last Saturday. The victory adds further lustre to the boxing record of the Bell family, formerly from Greymouth. Michael’s grandfather, Frank, won the light heavyweight title in 1933. An uncle, Len, was national welterweight champion in 1958 as one of six boxing brothers. Photograph by DEAN KOZANIC
