Winning snooker run continues
PA Hamilton The Waikato snooker player, Peter Hourigan, continued his dream run through section play of the Lion Brown national snooker championships at the Hamilton Cosmopolitan and Sports Club. Hourigan completed his fifth 3-0 victory in a row to be the only player in section play not to have dropped a frame. With one game to play he looked to have done enough already to qualify in the top 16 (two from each section) for post-section play. Similarly, the defending champion, Peter de Groot (Canterbury), last year’s runner-up, Harry Haenga (Wellington), Barry Moore (Auckland), Dave Meredith (Canterbury), the billiards champion, Brian Kirkness (Canterbury) and Waikato’s Winston Hill all led their sections with unbeaten records and seemed likely to qualify, although Kirkness had still to play the top seed in his section, Steve Robertson (Wellington). Among those struggling to qualify were the world championship team member, Roy Young (Otago), the North Island champion, Peter Michefski (Taranaki) and the
South Island champion, Stan Maffey (Canterbury). D. Boyce (Waikato) beat D. Gibb (Wellington) 3-0, K. Fisher (Waikato) beat D. Witehir (Otago) 3-1, B. Erickson (8.0. P. beat K.
