Bronze Valley fancied at Blenheim

By

W. R. CARSTON

In securing the mount on Bronze Valley in the Bayer Rintal Cup Trial at Blenheim tomorrow the Riccarton horseman, Tane Matthews, could well consider he has one of the prime rides at the Marlborough Racing Club’s meeting. And if the Awapunitrained stayer comes up with one of his peak runs in the first leg of the T.A.B. double there is every possibility that will prove correct. Bronze Valley is by no means the biggest winner in tomorrow’s field. In fact, it is 22 months now since his last success. But all along he has toiled rewardingly for minor placings, several of them in strong metropolitan company.

Riccarton’s Blyme and the Foxton-trained Galli-

poli are two of the obvious rivals Bronze Valley has to beat. Blyme’s form as a metric-miler this winter could hardly be faulted. He has won three and has finished out of a dividendbearing place only once in his last eight starts.

Blyme, like Gallipoli, goes into tomorrow’s field as a last-start winner. The latter, a member of the powerful Busuttin stable, has made good progress through the grades and earned a start at the top level when he managed 2000 metres successfully at Wanganui last Saturday.

If it came up wet, Royal Adder, which won this race last year for Ray Pankhurst’s Orari stable, would come strongly into favour. She was an improver’s fifth when making a fresh start among

the metric-milers at Ashburton last Saturday week.

With Pokare, White Lip and Pronto King to represent his stable Riccarton’s Michael Pitman should have bright hopes of saddling the successful quinella combination in the second leg, the Grove Tavern Sprint.

White Lip might not be the stable’s strongest link at 1410 metres but Pokare and Pronto King are both talented sprinters at best. Although up a grade this time Adios King should strengthen the prospect of a Riccarton victory. This member of “Ned” Thistoll’s team had to bow to Bacton Abbey at Ashburton last time out but if he can adopt the same front-running tactics around the turns here he could be a lot harder to peg back.

Race 7 D 3.55 GROVE TAVERN SPRINT HANDICAP $4500: 1410 m. 1 6202 Pokare 4 J. Fallen 56.0 Smart sprinter which showed he was close to his best again when runner-up to Chapel Hill at Ashburton last Saturday week. 2 0723 White Lip 1 T. Matthews 54.0 Has shown her best form over longer journeys than this but could still come up with a bold run in her first race since May. 3 0825 Pronto King 7 J. Dowling 53.0 Disappointing when fifth of five in sprint in Ashburton last Saturday week but better pointer to his prospects might be fast-finishing second behind Epatante on middle day of Grand National meeting. 4 0355 Reutemann 5 53.0 Was very smart sprinter in his younger

days but victory has eluded him since he was a four-year-old three seasons back. Could be all the better for this one, his first race since February. 5 8392 Adios King 6 J. Jamieson 52.0 Run down by Bacton Abbey after trying for an all-the-way win over this distance at Ashburton last Thursday week. Could be harder to peg back round the turns here. 6 0680 Custom 8 51.5 Previous winner on the course but would have to improve out of sight on another he has done in the last two seasons to prove a major threat. 7 8809 Gividago 2 51.5 Has been out of form too long to be rated among the brighter prospects. 8 1880 Ribot Knight 3 51.5 Won two races in the lower grades in Southland last season but failed to show anything when resuming at Riccarton last month. Race 8 4.30 THE OASIS CENTRE SERVICE STATION HANDICAP $3400, 2025 m 1 186 Moana Isle 4 B. Pellings7.o 2 6411 Ampac 5 G. Davison 56.5 4 9123 Count Claudio 2 G. Taylor 56.0 5 7103 Irish Indian 7 J. Race 5 D, T, TF 2.45 BAYER RINTAL CUP TRIAL HANDICAP $6500: 2025 m. 1 1351 Blyme 5 J. Dowling 55.5 Kept useful record as metric-miler moving during the winter and goes into this one with a last-start win at that distance at Ashburton last month on his record. 2 2397 Bronze Valley 6 T. Matthews 55.0 Has not won a race for 22 months but has some notable placings in stronger fields than this meanwhile and should take beating here. 3 1105 Royal Adder 7 G. Davison 54.5 Has run some of her best races when it comes up wet but still in early stages of a fresh campaign and a bold showing on top of the ground would not surprise. 4 0588 Gay King 2 D. Frye 54.0 Lone win in busy campaign last season was in highweight company at Gisborne in February. Failed to flatter in two starts at Ashburton last month. 5 0219 Vail of Tralee 9 B. Pellings2.s Weak showing when resuming against metric-milers at New Plymouth last week but came up with some very good staying runs in the lower grades last season and should be improved by her latest outing. 6 2321 Gallipoli 3 51.5 Capped off a useful string of minor placings with last-start victory over 2000 metres at Wanganui last Saturday. Will surprise if he fails to measure up at this higher level. 7 5006 Hotu Hui Lad 1 50.0 Has failed to flatter for some considerable time. Latest run was at Washdyke last Saturday when he finished sixth of seven against the class-two stayers. 8 8008 Taxtale 8 50.0 Another whose latest efforts have been well below her best standard. Was last successful at Grand National meeting 13 months ago. 9 5040 Zeb 4 50.0 Showed speed till his condition gave out in lower grade middle-distance event at Wanganui last Saturday when having first start since February. Lone win last.season was in highweight even at Waipukurau in November.
