Sir Alba set to extend record

Sir Alba looks set to extend an already impressive record in the D.B. Super Star Championship, a $30,000 Group II race for four-year-olds on the final night of the New Brighton Club’s spring meeting at Addington Raceway this evening.

The son of Alba Counsel has finished further back than third in only eight of his 28 starts and he has placed himself in the top section of his age group at both two and three years. He has had three starts on this campaign, winning a mobile 2600 m event in the splendid time of 3min 19.5 s on August 25. Last Saturday, after being forced extremely wide on the home turn, it was not surprising that he wilted to fourth behind the re-cord-breaking mare, Michele Bromac, in the Super Star Trial. He gave the winner a start of 10m and finished little more than half a length from her at the line. Sir Alba meets Michele Bromac on 10m less favourable terms this week,

a factor which must weigh heavily in his favour even though the mare could be expected to improve sharply as a result of last Saturday’s win. Keystone Surprise could offer most opposition to Sir Alba. His determined finishing run for a close third to Michele Bromac was one of the eye-catch-ing performances of last Saturday’s race. He made up many lengths over the last 300 m and was still travelling solidly at the post. Viewfield Prince, one of the more under-rated four-year-olds about, is only a C2 horse, but he has raced with distinction against the best of his age. should be the pick of the group on the front of this feature event

These three by no means exhaust the list of top chances in a field which looks the strongest ever gathered in the race.

Trident could have hardly been more impressive when he won a sprint last Saturday. He has improved immensely during the winter, although doubts have been expressed about his ability to accelerate away from a stand. He is too good to leave out of calculations, as are the stablemates, Laser Lad and Imperial Time, while bold efforts by American Style and Nugent Du Jour will not be a major surprise.
