Chance to record

A New Zealand band will get a $30,000 award in December to “contribute” to the costs of recording an album. The Rheineck Rock Award, sponsored by New Zealand Breweries, will, say the company, become an annual recognition of an original band. This year’s judges will be Karyn Hay, former presenter of “Radio with Pictures,” and a member of the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council advisory board; Colin Hogg, freelance journalist and rock critic; and Doug Hood, a music industry representative with band management experience and an independent disposition. Hogg says: “Making an album is vital for the success of any band, but costs are often prohibitive for new talent. “The idea of this award is to recognise the talent and energy of New Zealand bands, to applaud a band in a substantial and useful way, and acknowledge the place of original rock music alongside other artistic talents.” Applications for the award close in midNovember. An application form is available from: The Rheineck Rock Award, P.O. Box 5779, Wellesley Street, Auckland.
