Book fair for charities

Mr Graeme Carter, manager of the Theatre Royal, and Mrs Miriam Montigue browse through books which have been given for a book fair to benefit disabled skiers, the 1.H.C., and the theatre. So far a small volume by Mao Tse-tung and a complete chilren’s encyclopedia have come to light. Mrs Montigue, who organised the fair, hopes books will keep coming in from dark corners and dusty garages. With the fair being

held in the theatre there was an “awful lot of room” for reading matter, she said. The theatre will use its share of the proceeds in its reseating project. The new seating layout will include special arrangements for disabled people. The I.H.C. will use its share of the proceeds to help send people to the next Special Olympics, a national event. The fair is based on a similar event held annually in Dunedin. “The I.H.C. wanted to

have a fair but they didn’t have anywhere big enough, so we joined forces,” Mrs Montigue explained. Organisers hope the event will become a regular event in Christchurch. “After being involved in the theatre you get to know whether a thing is going to be good, and I’ve got that sort of a feeling,” Mrs Montigue

Books will be accepted at the Theatre Royal until October 4, the day of the fair.
