National contender chosen

PA Hastings National Party supporters and branch delegates roared with approval last evening when Mr Michael Laws, aged 29, a Parlimaentary researcher, was selected as the party’s challenger for the marginal Hawke’s Bay seat. Mr Laws beat off other contenders to win in a decisive first ballot result at the Taradale School hall. The win reflected the views of a vastly changed Hawke’s Bay electorate. The former safe National seat is now made up of 80 per cent urban voters and 20 per cent rural voters. “I feel an enormous responsibly,” Mr Laws said after his victory. Mr Laws, a former captain of a national debating team, won the candidacy with a hard-hitting speech after a strong showing by a Tanamu farmer, Mr Ewan McGregor.
