Inquiry sought over Budget

Wellington reporter The Opposition is seeking another inquiry into the early delivery of copies of the Budget — this time by Parliament’s Finance and Expenditure Select Committee. A National member of the committee, Mr Michael Cox, said yesterday that he had asked for an inquiry into why almost 10,000 copies went out for delivery before the Budget was formally presented to Parliament. The chairman of the State Services Commission, Dr Rod Deane, recently investigated the deliveries and two earlier reports were done by the head of the Prime Minister’s Department, Mr Gerald Hensley. They found no evidence of anyone benefiting improperly from early knowledge of the Budget, and attributed early deliveries to staff inexperience and a lack of formal guidelines. The Minister of Finance, Mr Douglas, offered to resign when he first learnt of the breach a month ago.

Mr Cox said the select committee could satisfy the public interest in all aspects of the affair.
